Dec 19 (Reuters) - PPL Corp (PPL.N) said it will ask the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to approve a combined license to construct and operate a new generating unit near the Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania.

PPL does not expect the cost of the licensing effort to impact its forecast of earnings from ongoing operations, the company said in a statement.

PPL has contracted with an affiliate of UniStar Nuclear Energy, a joint venture of power company Constellation Energy Group Inc (CEG.N) and European electricity producer EDF, to prepare the application. (Reporting by Dhanya Skariachan in Bangalore; Editing by Deepak Kannan)
