HELSINKI, Dec 28 (Reuters) - The world's top cellphone maker Nokia (NOK1V.HE) said on Friday Daniel R. Hesse, who was named chief executive of Sprint Nextel Corp (S.N) earlier this month, had decided to resign from the Nokia board.

"Dan (Hesse) has made an important contribution to the Nokia board and we will miss his input to the board work," Nokia Chairman Jorma Ollila said in a statement.

Hesse had served on the Nokia board since 2005, the company said.

Nokia's board would continue with 10 members until at least the next shareholder meeting, scheduled for May 8, 2008, Nokia said. (Reporting by Sakari Suoninen)
