BOSTON, July 24 (Reuters) - Business software maker BMC Software Inc (BMC.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) reported a sharp decline in quarterly net income on Thursday on charges related to its $800 million acquisition of BladeLogic.

BMC, whose software helps businesses automate data center operations, said fiscal first-quarter net income fell to $1 million, or 1 cent per share, from $55 million, or 27 cents, a year earlier.

Revenue rose 14 percent to $438 million at the company, whose rivals include CA Inc (CA.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), Hewlett-Packard Co (HPQ.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and International Business Machines Corp (IBM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz).

BMC said it took $97.6 million in charges related to its April purchase of software maker BladeLogic, which was offset by a tax benefit of $16.4 million.

Excluding the impact of those items, BMC reported a quarterly profit of 43 cents per share.

Analysts, on average, were expecting BMC to report profit excluding items of 42 cents per share on revenue of $433 million, according to Reuters Estimates.

The company also reiterated full-year earnings targets it issued three months ago, including a forecast that it will post growth in bookings and revenue "in the low double digits." (Reporting by Jim Finkle; Editing by Tim Dobbyn)
