-- Outbound President Chen Shui-bian said he felt "free beyond comparison" on his final night before leaving office on Tuesday.

-- Taiwan's diplomatic allies proposed in Geneva that the island be allowed World Health Assembly observer status.

-- Leaders in Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), including Chen and outgoing Vice President Annette Lu, will not attend Ma Ying-jeou's inauguration events.

-- Taiwan stock and currency markets were up on hopes for new cross-Strait trade and transit ties following Ma's inauguration.

-- DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen said she would be willing to visit Chinese President Hu Jintao if China did not impose conditions.
