RPT-Taiwan prosecutors investigating UMC

TAIPEI, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp (2303.TW), the world's second largest contract chip maker, confirmed that prosecutors have been to its offices as part of a probe into the company's investments.

Taiwan prosecutors were at UMC's headquarters in Hsinchu and its Taipei office to investigate the company's investments, said Lo Hsueh-mei, a spokeswoman from the Hsinchu District Prosecutors Office.

"This case was passed to us by the Financial Supervisory Commission," Lo said.

"It involves one or two senior UMC executives. We are still investigating," she said, when asked whether it was an insider trading case as reported by other media.

Sandy Yen, a spokesman from UMC, confirmed that prosecutors had searched UMC's offices.

"All I know is they came to our Taipei office. They were there to get some information on our investments," he said.

The news came after the Taipei stock market closed on Wednesday. UMC shares rose 2.7 percent to T$13.30, outperforming the main TAIEX index's 1.7 percent jump. (US$1=T$31.5) (Reporting by Baker Li and Lee Chyen Yee; Editing by Chris Wickham)
