(Recasts, updates with company confirming fire extinguished)
NEW YORK, Feb 11 (Reuters) - A fire on Friday at a distillate hydrotreater at Hovensa LLC‘S 500,000 barrel-per-day refinery in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, was extinguished on Friday.
The fire was put out at 5:47 local time (2147 GMT) Friday, the company said.
“The rest of the refinery remains in production,” said company spokesperson Alex Moorhead.
Firefighters battled the blaze for about two and a half hours at the distillate desulfurizing unit, which uses hydrogen to reduce sulfur in distillates.
There were no injuries reported and all employees and contractors are accounted for, Hovensa said.
The U.S. Coast Guard received a notice about the fire at 3:15 p.m local time, said Ricardo Castrodad, Coast Guard spokesman.
“Our personnel are now on site,” Castrodad added.
Hovensa is jointly-owned by Hess (HES.N) and Petroleos de Venezuela and is operated by Hess. (Reporting by Selam Gebrekidan and Jeffrey Kerr;Additonal reporting by Erwin Seba; editing by Sofina Mirza-Reid)
