Rosatom looks to global diversification - report

LONDON, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Russia’s atomic agency Rosatom, which bought a controlling stake in Canada’s Uranium One UUU.TO in June, is in talks to build a uranium enrichment plant in the United States, its chief executive was quoted as saying on Wednesday.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Sergei Kiriyenko said the state-owned nuclear giant’s acquisition of the Canada-based miner is the starting point for global diversification.

“The acquisition of Uranium One is not the end of the line for us in developing our uranium strategy,” Kiriyenko said.

“We want to establish a growth platform as a basis for being able to develop our further progress for integration, co-operation, and mergers and acquisitions in other markets.”

Kiriyenko declined to provide details on the U.S. deal, the newspaper said.

Rosatom, which is seeking partners for its domestic enrichment facilities, has signed a deal with a Kazakh agency and is in talks with a prospective partner from Ukraine, the newspaper said.

Kiriyenko also dismissed criticism of Rosatom’s role in providing fuel and other services for Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant.

Iran began fueling its first nuclear power plant last weekend. Russia designed, built and will supply fuel for Bushehr, taking back spent rods which could be used to make weapons-grade plutonium in order to ease nuclear proliferation concerns.

“We are confident the Bushehr nuclear power plant cannot be used for military purposes,” Kiriyenko said. “Technologically, it’s impossible.” (Reporting by Karolina Tagaris; Editing by Richard Chang)
