UPDATE 1-US trade body to probe Sharp's Samsung LCD complaint

* U.S. ITC to take up Sharp case against Samsung

* Many patent suits between the two companies

WASHINGTON, Feb 4 (Reuters) - The U.S. International Trade Commission said on Thursday it will weigh allegations that Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) infringed Sharp Corp (6753.T) patents on liquid crystal display (LCD) screens.

The ITC’s decision to take up the case is the latest development in a string of suits and countersuits over technology used to sharpen pictures on televisions and other electronics.

Sharp, which had filed the most recent ITC complaint in early January, had asked the ITC to bar entry of Samsung televisions and other devices made with the infringing technology.

Sharp said in mid-December that it had won an LCD patent lawsuit against Samsung in the Netherlands.

Samsung and Sharp are also in LCD patent-related lawsuits in Japan and Germany. Patent suits, appeals and settlements are often a long prelude to a cross-licensing agreement.

The U.S. ITC case number is 337-702. (Reporting by Diane Bartz; Editing by Tim Dobbyn)
