A letter by William B. Travis, a lieutenant colonel in the Texas Army, written in 1836 during the Battle of the Alamo, is seen in this image provided by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. The famous letter written by the commander of the small force of Texans defending the Alamo is being prepared by historians for display at the San Antonio mission for the first time since Travis wrote it there, pleading for reinforcements. As the battle raged outside, Travis wrote in the letter, ''I will never surrender or retreat.'' With its dramatic ending -- ''Victory or Death!'' -- the letter is now considered one of the defining documents of 19th-Century American history.
