Nationals' Johnson out for season with wrist injury

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Reuters) - Washington Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on his broken wrist, the Major League team said on Tuesday.

"I feel bad for Nick, because I know how much Nick loves to play and how important he is to our ball club," Nationals manager Manny Acta said on the team's Web site. "He's the ultimate professional."

Johnson, who was batting .220 with five home runs and 20 RBI this season, injured his right wrist on May 13 and was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

He was examined by a specialist on Monday and it was decided arthroscopic surgery was needed to repair a small tear in a ligament.

The 29-year-old infielder has battled injuries throughout his career, missing all of last season after breaking his right leg.

"I feel bad for Nick and his family," general manager Jim Bowden said. "He's had a tough career of injuries, this setback is almost amazing," said Nationals general manager Jim Bowden. "He'll work hard."
