Coach McCarthy signs five-year deal with Green Bay
MIAMI (Reuters) - NFL Coach of the Year Mike McCarthy has signed a new five-year deal with the Green Bay Packers, the team said on Tuesday.
McCarthy guided the Packers to a 13-3 record and within one game of the Super Bowl this season, his second as head coach in Green Bay.
"It's great to have the contract completed. I'm thrilled to death to be part of the future of the Packers. The five-year deal I think is a reflection of the commitment to our football program and the direction that we're headed," said McCarthy.
Led by quarterback Brett Favre, the Packers improved from an 8-8 record in the previous year by employing a high-powered offense that ranked second in total yards per game.
The Packers captured the NFC North and advanced to the conference title game but lost to eventual champions the New York Giants, 23-20 in overtime at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
McCarthy said he was determined to take the team to Super Bowl glory in the coming years.
"The goal will never change. It's been the same since the first time I stood in front of the media and the fans, and that's to win the world championship and bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Green Bay," he said.
Packers general manager Ted Thompson said he was delighted to have wrapped up the deal.
"Mike brings tremendous passion, work ethic and structure to his position. These are the traits we saw in him when he was hired and we're very happy for the success we have had under his guidance," he said.
