(Reuters) - Factbox on Jamaican Asafa Powell who set a 100 meters world record of 9.74 seconds at a grand prix meeting in Rieti, Italy, on Sunday:

Born: November 11 1982, St Catherine, Jamaica.

*Disqualified for a false start in the quarter-finals of the 2003 world championships after setting the fastest time of 10.05 in the heats.

*Finishes fifth in the 2004 Olympic final behind champion Justin Gatlin.

*Sets a world record of 9.77 seconds in Athens on June 14 2005, beating Tim Montgomery's previous best of 9.78 which was later erased from the record books after the American was given a two-year doping ban. Powell misses the world championships because of injury.

*Wins the Commonwealth 100 meters title in Melbourne in March 2006 and helps Jamaica to gold in the 100 relay.

*American Gatlin equals the world record in Doha on May 12 2006 but is then banned for up to eight years, pending the result of an arbitration hearing, after a positive test for testosterone.

*Powell equals his record of 9.77 in Gateshead, England on June 11 and again in Zurich on August 18 and ends the 2006 season undefeated.

*Finishes a disappointing third behind fellow title favorite Tyson Gay in the 100 at the 2007 world championships in Osaka in August. Powell wins a silver medal in the relay as Gay and the U.S. team take gold.

*Breaks the 100 world record on September 9 2007, running 9.74 in his heat at the Rieti grand prix.
