(Reuters) - World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) president Dick Pound, 65, has criticized former International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch over his stance on doping.

Here are some details about Pound.

* EARLY CAREER:

-- Pound was born in Ontario, Canada, in March 1942. He was a finalist in the 100 meters freestyle at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, and a gold medalist in the 110 yards freestyle at the 1962 Commonwealth Games.

-- He was Canadian freestyle champion in 1958, 1960, 1961, and 1962 and for butterfly in 1961.

-- A two-degree holder from McGill University in Montreal in both Commerce and Civil Law. Pound also received a Licentiate in Accounting from McGill in 1964.

* SPORTS BODIES:

-- Pound became Secretary General (1968-1976) then President (1977-1982) of the Canadian Olympic Association. He was also deputy chef de mission of the Canadian Olympic delegation in Munich in 1972.

-- He has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 1978. He then became a member of the Executive Board from 1983-1991 and 1992-2000. He became vice-president of the IOC for two terms from 1987-1991 and 1996-2000.

* WADA & CONTROVERSY:

-- He became chairman of WADA from its beginnings in 1999.

-- Pound criticized the International Cycling Union (UCI) over doping scandals during the 2007 Tour de France. The Tour suffered two positive tests and the sacking of Denmark's race leader Michael Rasmussen by his Rabobank team.

-- Pound said "I thought they (the UCI) were saying the right things, moving in the right direction. What is happening this year is worse than the Festina (doping scandal) affair (in 1998). "They (the UCI) are either incapable of dealing with this or disingenuous at best."

-- Pound delivered his last report to WADA in July 2007 and said that more than a handful of sporting federations were not complying with WADA's doping code, which could lead to their sports being banned from the Olympics.
