WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Atlantic Coast Conference champion North Carolina was selected on Sunday as the overall top seed in the upcoming NCAA Basketball Tournament.

North Carolina (32-2), riding an 11-game winning streak and looking for their fourth national championship, was picked as the top seed in the East Region.

Joining the Tar Heels as top seeds in the 65-team tournament are Memphis (33-1) in the South, Kansas (31-3) in the Midwest, and UCLA (31-3) in the West.

If the seeding holds true to form, North Carolina will face Kansas while Memphis will battle UCLA in the national semi-finals on April 5 in San Antonio.

The tournament begins on Tuesday when Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Coppin State (16-20) faces Mount St. Mary's (18-14) in Dayton, Ohio, for the right to become the 16th seed in the East and face North Carolina in the opening round.

The national championship game will be played on April 7 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
