Bud Selig wants better drug tests

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Baseball must continue to improve its ability to test for performance-enhancing drugs, especially human growth hormone, Commissioner Bud Selig said on Sunday.

"It's not perfect, it's going to change," Selig said about baseball's current testing program. "There are chemists out there working.

"I don't delude myself for one second that the job is finished."

Doping has tarnished the sport's image with two top players, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, facing allegations they used steroids.

Major League Baseball is trying to eradicate doping by imposing mandatory tests on all players and imposing stiffer penalties for those who test positive for drugs.

Yet tests still need to be developed for human growth hormone, or HGH.

"We don't have a test for human growth hormone, but nobody has a test," Selig told reporters during the inaugural game at the Washington Nationals' new ballpark.

He said tests for steroids and amphetamines were very effective.  Continued...
