LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Joe Sakic will play in the NHL for a 20th season after signing a one-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday, the team said on their website.

The 39-year-old Sakic was considering retirement following a season in which he missed 38 games due to injury. The $6 million deal sees Sakic return for another year with the team he has played for since the 1995-96 season.

"Ultimately it came down to the fact that I still enjoy playing and competing," Sakic told the Avalanche website (avalanche.nhl.com).

"I'm comfortable with my conditioning and my overall health."

Sakic has recorded 1,629 points, the most among active NHL players. He has 623 goals and 1,006 assists.
