Missed Tour cuts a distant memory for resurgent Ogilvy
MIAMI (Reuters) - Australia's Geoff Ogilvy was in upbeat mood after surging into contention in brutal conditions at the Tampa Bay Championship in Palm Harbour on Saturday.
Ogilvy carded a two-under-par 69 in gusting winds to lie two strokes behind pacesetting American Stewart Cink after making his first PGA Tour cut of the year earlier in the day.
"When it's tough like that, you've got to play proper golf," the 2006 U.S. Open champion told reporters after posting a 54-hole total of three-under 210. "And I played proper golf today. It was nice.
With winds gusting up to 70 kph on the challenging Copperhead Course, Ogilvy said he would have been happy to shoot anything around par, so being under was a bonus.
"I thought yesterday was tough, but I think today might have been tougher," he added.
"I hit lots of good shots and I had a couple of poor ones. When I did hit poor ones, I got them up and down most of the time.
"I actually had a few chances. It's hard to make putts out there because the putts break so much in the crosswind."
Ogilvy, whose 69 included three birdies and a lone bogey, was delighted to make his first Tour cut of the season after the weather-delayed second round was completed earlier in the day.
