SOUTHPORT (Reuters) - Japan's Toru Taniguchi withdrew from the British Open on Thursday, citing a back injury.

The 40-year-old, a 13-times winner on the Japan Tour, has been replaced by American Heath Slocum, the first alternate.

Slocum, 34, will make his debut in the world's oldest major championship.
