Rockies roll over Phillies to take 2-0 lead
PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - The Colorado Rockies rolled over the Philadelphia Phillies 10-5 on Thursday to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five National League Division Series.
Colorado second baseman Kaz Matsui had three hits and five RBI, delivering a grand slam home run in the fourth and a run-scoring triple in the sixth.
Matt Holliday and Yorvit Torrealba each contributed a pair of RBI to the win, as the Rockies continued their blistering late season-form collecting their 16th win in 17 games.
The series shifts to Denver on Saturday for game three and the Phillies face an uphill climb. Teams that have won the opening two games in a best-of-five format have gone on to win the series 20 of 21 times.
Colorado got off to a quick start when Troy Tulowitzki and Holliday belted back-to-back homers into the left-field stands to stake the Rockies to a 2-0 first-inning lead.
Shortstop Jimmy Rollins whacked a solo homer in the bottom of the inning and added a two-run triple in the second to give the Phillies a 3-2 advantage.
Philadelphia held the lead until Matsui's grand slam into the right-field seats of a sold-out Citizens Bank Park off starter Kyle Kendrick, which put the Rockies 6-3 up.
The Rockies broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning on a two-run double by Torrealba, Matsui's run-scoring triple and an RBI single by Holliday.
A home run by Ryan Howard and a run-scoring ground out by Rollins trimmed the deficit to 10-5 but the Rockies' relievers were in no mood to relinquish the lead. Continued...
