NEW YORK (Reuters) - Super Bowl champions the New York Giants signed free agent quarterback David Carr on Wednesday as a backup for Eli Manning.

Carr, the first overall pick in the 2002 draft, agreed to a one-year, $1 million deal with incentives, the NFL Network reported.

The Giants will be the third team in as many years for Carr, who last season played in six games for the Carolina Panthers. He played his first five seasons with the Houston Texans.

Carr's offensive coordinator during his first four years in Houston was Chris Palmer, who is entering his second season as the Giants' quarterbacks coach.
