Alfredsson signs contract extension with Senators

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Ottawa Senators signed captain and all-time leading scorer Daniel Alfredsson to a four-year contract extension on Thursday with the Swede almost certain to finish his career in the Canadian capital.

Media reports said the deal was worth $22 million to Alfredsson.

"The Senators organization and the city of Ottawa have embraced both me and my family as part of this community," Alfredsson told reporters at a news conference.

"It's an exciting time for our family to know that we'll be able to spend the rest of my NHL career in Ottawa."

Taken by Ottawa in the sixth round of the 1994 NHL draft, Alfredsson has spent his career in a Senators uniform.

He is the franchise leader in games played (861), goals (334), assists (522) and points (856).

The 35-year-old right-winger has three goals and six assists in eight games this season.

A five-time all-star, Alfredsson won the Calder trophy as NHL rookie of the year in 1996 and helped Sweden to a gold medal at the 2006 Turin Olympics.

"Daniel is the type of person and player that we want to continue building this franchise around," said Ottawa general manager Bryan Murray. "We are happy to have him here to lead our team toward the goal of bringing a Stanley Cup to Ottawa."
