NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Buffalo Bills fired Turk Schonert on Friday, becoming the third team this week to fire an offensive coordinator before the season has even started.

"We have removed Turk Schonert and relieved him of his responsibilities as offensive coordinator," head coach Dick Jauron told a news conference.

"It's nothing we had planned on and was nothing enjoyable in any way, shape or form."

The Buffalo first team had failed to score an offensive touchdown in five pre-season games.

Bills quarterback coach Alex Van Pelt has been promoted to Schonert's old role and will call the plays for the opening game of the regular season at the New England Patriots on September 14.

On Thursday, Tampa fired offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinksi while the Kansas City Chiefs removed Chan Gailey on Monday.
