Stock Market Update - Tue Aug 14 10:00:01 EDT 2007
[BRIEFING.COM] The major averages continue to trade in split fashion as industry leadership remains mixed. Of the five sectors trading lower, Consumer Discretionary (-0.8%) paces the way as Wal-Mart's disappointment weighs heavily on retailers (RLX -1.4%). Mattel (MAT 22.80 -0.77) saying it faces more toy recalls is also a sector blemish. The Industrial sector (-0.5%) ranks second as investors unwind some of the 1.4% rally witnessed in railroad stocks yesterday.
On the upside, Energy is recouping some of the 0.9% it lost yesterday; but it's doing so at the expense of rising oil prices, which is acting as an offset to the sector's modest 0.5% advance. As evidenced by the Nasdaq posting the only gain among the majors, Technology is also catching a bid. However, it's gain (+0.4%) too has not been convincing enough to prompt a more aggressive market bounce following yesterday's relatively flat finish.
