Qatar says Vodafone group wins 2nd mobile licence
DOHA, Dec 10 (Reuters) - A consortium including Britain's Vodafone Group Plc (VOD.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) won Qatar's second mobile phone licence, Qatar's telecommunications regulator said on Monday, without saying how much the group had agreed to pay.
Vodafone's group was among five that remained in the contest for the licence to end the last telecom monopoly in the Arab world.
Other bidders included AT&T (ATT.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), Emirates Telecommunications Corp ETEL.AD (Etisalat) and Kuwait's Mobile Telecommunications Co (ZAIN.KW: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) (Zain), the regulator said in a statement.
Qatar Telecommunications Co QTEL.QA runs the only mobile and fixed-line networks in Qatar, an OPEC oil producer with the world's third-largest natural gas reserves. (Reporting by Daliah Merzaban; editing by Dayan Candappa)
