(Reuters) - Factbox on swimmer Rebecca Adlington (Britain) who won the Olympic gold medal in the women's 400m freestyle on Monday.

Place of birth: Mansfield, Britain

Career achievements:

Silver medallist, 2006 European Championships (800m freestyle)

Gold medallist, 2008 World Short Course Championships (800m freestyle)

Silver medallist, 2008 World Short Course Championships (4x200m freestyle relay)

At Britain's 2008 Olympic Games trials she shattered the oldest British record on the books, taking five seconds of Sara Hardcastle's 1986 record for the 800m freestyle. As a 15-year-old she was invited to attend Britain's holding camp ahead of the 2004 Olympics to gain experience and act as Rebecca Cooke's training partner.
