MECCA, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - Rival Palestinian factions agreed to end fighting in an agreement signed in the Islamic holy city of Mecca on Thursday.

Following are the main points of the agreement:

* President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah and the Hamas Islamist group that won a parliamentary election last year agreed to form a national unity government.

* Abbas asked Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh to head the new government.

* Abbas said the new government should "respect the resolutions of international law and the agreements signed by the Palestine Liberation Organization".

* Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh will have a deputy from Fatah, officials said.

* The three key posts of finance, foreign affairs and interior will be occupied by independents, officials said.
