Russia's U.N. envoy condemns Jerusalem attack

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Russia's U.N. ambassador on Thursday condemned a deadly attack on a Jewish school in Jerusalem as a clear cut "act of terrorism" that was intended to lead to more bloodshed in the Middle East.

"To see people walk into a religious school and open fire on the students there, that is really something which should give one pause, especially those who care about religion," Russian Ambassador to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin, told reporters after a U.N. Security Council meeting on the attack.

He said the attack by a Palestinian gunman who killed at least eight people and wounded others was a "clear cut individual act of terrorism specifically targeted against civilians."

Speaking to reporters after the council failed to reach an agreement on a U.S.-drafted statement calling the attack a "terrorist" act, Churkin said the intention was "not just to inflict violence but to (provoke) more violence."
