WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said on Thursday he believed it was important for an American to continue to be appointed to the presidency of the World Bank.

Paulson made the comments in an interview with PBS-TV host Jim Lehrer in an interview taped before the World Bank announced Paul Wolfowitz' resignation on June 30.

"We look forward to putting this behind us all and refocusing the bank on its mission going forward," Paulson said.
