Braves trade Teixeira to Angels

BOSTON (Reuters) - The Los Angeles Angels upgraded their already potent offense on Tuesday by acquiring slugging first baseman Mark Teixeira from the Atlanta Braves.

In exchange for the 28-year-old Teixeira, the American League West Division leaders gave up first baseman Casey Kotchman and pitching prospect Stephen Marek.

"Mark's definitely a two-way player," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said on the team's website (losangeles.angels.mlb.com).

“Mark Teixeira is a guy who brings us a presence that’s tough to put into words what he’s going to mean to our club.”

Teixeira, an All-Star in 1995, is batting .283 with 20 homers and 78 RBIs this season and is a career .286 hitter with a .373 on-base percentage and .536 slugging mark.

The Angels’ 66-40 record is the best in baseball this season.
