DETROIT (Billboard) - Beastie Boys member Adam "MCA" Yauch, recently diagnosed with cancer, said on Wednesday he is "rapidly recovering" from surgery, and is gearing up for seven weeks of radiation treatment.
Yauch, 45, announced last month that doctors had found a cancerous tumor in his left salivary gland, as well as a lymph node in the same area. The Beasties subsequently postponed the September 15 release of their new album, "Hot Sauce Committee Part 1," and canceled all scheduled live performances.
In an e-mail to fans on the group's mailing list, Yauch said the surgery took place about a week and a half ago, and he returned home after just one night in the hospital "to relax, have home cooked food and hang out with the family."
Yauch said he's also been avoiding pain medications that would slow his healing, and is now preparing to start radiation treatment in a few weeks.
He heard about or watched on YouTube the various tributes paid to him during last weekend's All Points West festival near Manhattan, including Coldplay's Chris Martin playing a solo piano version of "(You've Got to) Fight For Your Right (to Party)" and Jay-Z busting a bit of "No Sleep Till Brooklyn."
"I do think that all of the well wishes have contributed to the fact that my treatment and recovery are going well," he wrote. "Much love back at all of you!"
Yauch's initial July 20 message revealing the cancer said doctors caught it early, but there's been no official word on how advanced the disease is. Yauch did not say when he planned to update fans again.
