LOS ANGELES "Two and A Half Men" actor Charlie Sheen has entered rehab, his publicist said on Friday, a day after being hospitalized following reports of a 36-hour drug and drink-fueled party at his home.
CBS television said that production on "Two and A Half Men" -- the highest rated TV comedy in the United States -- was being put on hold as a result, and that it supported Sheen's decision.
"Charlie Sheen has voluntarily entered an undisclosed rehabilitation center today. He is most grateful to all who have expressed their concern," the actor's spokesman Stan Rosenfield told Reuters.
Rosenfield said that Sheen had asked for his privacy to be respected and that no additional informational will be provided.
Sheen, 45, the highest paid actor on U.S. television, was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital with severe abdominal pains on Thursday. He left the hospital late on Thursday and was earlier said to be planning to return to the set of the TV show as scheduled next Tuesday.
"Due to Charlie Sheen's decision to enter a rehabilitation center, CBS, Warner Bros. Television and executive producer Chuck Lorre are placing 'Two and a Half Men' on production hiatus," CBS said in a statement.
"We are profoundly concerned for his health and well-being, and support his decision," the statement added.
Sheen reportedly earns about $27.5 million a year for his starring role as a womanizing bachelor on "Two and A Half Men," the No. 1 comedy on U.S. television with some 15 million weekly viewers.
But his personal issues, including stints in rehab, an admitted penchant for porn stars and prostitutes, and a 2009 attack on his wife, have dominated headlines for the past year.
CBS entertainment chief Nina Tassler told journalists earlier this month that the network had a "high level of concern" about Sheen's personal life, but that he had always behaved professionally at work. Warner Bros Television produces the comedy.
Sheen was taken by stretcher to an ambulance early on Thursday morning with what were described as severe abdominal pains. Friends said the pains were the result of a previous hernia injury.
But the explanation was met with skepticism after celebrity website TMZ.com claimed that Sheen had been partying for 36 hours at his house, and had been seen smoking cocaine.
In October, New York police found him drunk in a trashed hotel room with a naked porn star. His spokesman said at the time he had an allergic reaction to medication.
Sheen, the son of "West Wing" actor Martin Sheen, has a long history of addiction. He was ordered to rehab by a court in Aspen, Colorado, last August after pleading guilty to attacking his then third wife during an alcohol-fueled argument on Christmas Day 2009.
He also spent time in rehab in 1998 after being hospitalized for a drug overdose.
