NEW YORK A New York City high school student was arraigned on felony charges on Thursday for allegedly trying to burn a classmate's eyes with acid during chemistry class, prosecutors said.
Zhanna Smsarian, 16, of Brooklyn is accused of approaching Albina Eshimbaeva, 15, from behind and pouring a diluted solution of hydrochloric acid on her hair and face on Wednesday, prosecutors said.
Eshimbaeva reported her face and head were burning, and she was taken for emergency burn treatment at a nearby hospital. Details of her condition were not immediately available.
According to court records, Smsarian told police she dumped the acid on Eshimbaeva with the intention of burning her eyes out.
Police said the two girls were friends but had some sort of ongoing dispute.
Smsarian was arraigned on Thursday on two felony assault charges and a misdemeanor charge of criminal possession of a weapon. Her attorney could not be immediately reached for comment.
