German police bag huge heroin haul

BERLIN (Reuters) - German authorities found 330 lbs of heroin in a truck in northwestern Germany in one of country's biggest seizures of the drug, police said on Friday.

The heroin, worth around 6 million $8.6 million according to the prosecutor's office in Muenster, had been stashed in travel bags inside a truck from Turkey.

The vehicle was stopped in Bocholt, near the border with the Netherlands, and the 32-year-old driver was taken into custody, the Federal Criminal Police Office said in a statement.

"This is one of the biggest-ever seizures in Germany," the statement said, adding that most heroin smuggled into western Europe originates in Afghanistan and often comes via Balkan countries.

In 2006, Germany made 6,763 drug seizures, confiscating 1,933 lbs of heroin, the Office said. Investigations into the latest seizure were continuing.
