LOS ANGELES The Pittsburgh Steelers placed wide receiver Santonio Holmes on the inactive list on Friday, after he was stopped by police and found to have a small quantity of marijuana in his car.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Holmes was stopped during a routine investigation on Thursday by police, who found the drug.
"His situation has created somewhat of a distraction," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a report on the team's website (wwww.steelers.com). "We want to minimize that and stay focused on the task at hand."
Holmes will miss Sunday's game against the New York Giants, though the team said it had not suspended him and he was expected to report for practice on Monday.
Under league rules, NFL teams have to have a certain number of players on the inactive list for each game.
The 24-year-old has 22 receptions for 360 yards and one touchdown this season for the Steelers.
