Federer signals intent with rout of Gasquet
Roger Federer overwhelmed Richard Gasquet 6-1 6-4 in under an hour at the Hopman Cup on Friday to signal his return to form following a long injury layoff.
JOHANNESBURG Each of the eight teams in the quarter-finals of the World Cup will pledge to fight racism and discrimination in all forms ahead of their matches to raise awareness, FIFA said Friday.
As part of a campaign which began in 2001, captains of both teams before each game will read out a declaration rejecting racism or any kind of discrimination on and off the field.
"We believe in the power of football to unite men and women of all races, all religions and all nationalities," the statement read.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter said the players seen as role models across the world would help in the fight against the twin social ills.
Former South African president Nelson Mandela also added his voice to the campaign, saying that hosting the World Cup had brought South Africans together.
