Senate panel OKs Lael Brainard for Treasury post

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate Finance Committee on Wednesday approved Lael Brainard to become the Treasury Department’s top global diplomat, a job that would give her a key role in the bid to push China toward a flexible currency.

Brainard would become U.S. Treasury undersecretary for international affairs, a position she was nominated for months ago, if formally approved by a full Senate vote as expected.

The former White House economic adviser told senators last month that she expected to devote a large part of her time to working on U.S. concerns about China’s exchange rate policy.
