U.S. shutdown hampers implementation of Iran, Syria sanctions -W.House

WASHINGTON, Oct 4 (Reuters) - The White House said on Friday the Treasury Department office responsible for implementing U.S. sanctions, including those against Iran and Syria, was unable to sustain its "core functions" because of worker furloughs caused by the federal government shutdown.

"That is a negative consequence of this wholly unnecessary decision by the House (of Representatives) Republicans to shut down the government," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters.
