White House: hope to have debt commission running soon

WASHINGTON, March 12 (Reuters) - The White House said on Friday that it hoped to have President Barack Obama's fiscal commission up and running soon.

"Our strong hope is that in the next few weeks, not only will the commission be filled out but we'll have staff in place and that the commission can meet soon in order to generate recommendations, hopefully that Congress can act on quickly," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told a daily news briefing.

He spoke after Republican leaders of Congress picked their six choices to serve on the commission, which Obama hopes will come up with ideas on how to ease the U.S. debt and deficit.
