He had been ill for some time and it was revealed last summer that he had been given 18 months to live because of liver problems. As a personality he was known for his flamboyance and bon viveur. Career-wise, Winner was best known internationally for his Death Wish movies starring Charles Bronson. In the UK he was known for his work as a newspaper columnist and the face of a motor insurance company. He also founded and funded the Police Memorial Trust in the UK following the murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher outside the Libyan embassy in London in 1984. During his 40 year movie making career, Michael Winner worked with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood, including Marlon Brando, Robert Mitchum and Faye Dunaway.
