African Union demands release of Mauritanian leader

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - The African Union demanded on Thursday that soldiers who staged a coup in Mauritania release the West African country's president and other detainees.

"(The AU) demands the release of the president ... and other personalities who were arrested, the preservation of their safety, security and dignity, as well as those of the members of their families," it said in a statement issued in Addis Ababa.
