NAIROBI (Reuters) - The United States said on Wednesday that Rwandan soldiers were not directly involved in eastern Congo's fighting but that Rwandan soil was being used to support rebels advancing on an eastern Congolese town.

As the CNDP rebels advanced on North Kivu's provincial capital of Goma on Wednesday, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, who fought two wars in the 1990s, accused each other's armies of firing across their shared border.

"We have no evidence that Rwanda is fighting directly in the conflict in East Congo. We do believe that Rwandan territory is being used to support the CNDP," U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer told journalists.
