WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Gaps remain in a New Orleans flood control system despite improvements after Hurricane Katrina, a U.S. official said on Thursday as federal agencies prepared for Tropical Storm Gustav to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers official Bill Irwin told a telephone news conference that the agency was rushing to install temporary reinforcements along the Inner Harbor Navigation Channel in New Orleans, which was devastated by Katrina in 2005.
