Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. and KYORIN Holdings, Inc. Announce Results of Domestic PII Trial of Ranirestat-Jiho, Inc.

Jiho, Inc. reported that Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma (DSP) and Kyorin Holdings (HD) have announced the results of a PIIb clinical trial of ranirestat, which is being developed jointly by DSP and Kyorin Pharmaceutical in Japan for the treatment of diabetic complications. Although the total nerve conduction velocity, an indication for the improvement of diabetic peripheral neuropathy which served as the primary endpoint, did not show any clear dose response, it increased significantly in all groups administered ranirestat compared to pre-treatment baseline. Discovered by DSP, ranirestat is expected to improve diabetic neuropathy, a major diabetic complication, by potently inhibiting aldose reductase and thereby preventing intracellular accumulation of sorbitol.
