Wednesday, 14 Nov 2012 05:01am EST

ABB Ltd (ABB) announced that it has won orders worth around USD 170 million for substation project for Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), Saudi Arabia's national power operator. The orders will be booked in the third quarter of 2012. The Company will design, install and commission a substation to help meet the growing demand for electricity in and around the central pilgrimage area, Makkah. The substation will be equipped with ABB's GIS (gas insulated switchgear) and housed in an apartment building in a densely populated and urbanized area. GIS stations are space-saving and suited for application in urban city centers or other areas with limited space. ABB will also build four additional GIS stations for transmission and distribution in the western and southern regions. The project is planned to be completed in 2014, and includes delivery of products such as high-and medium-voltage switchgear, transformers, backup power systems and cables. ABB will also provide SCADA system (supervisory control and data acquisition), as well as automation, control, protection- and communication systems according to the IEC 61850 international standard to enable remote monitoring and remote control of geographically dispersed plants from the SEC's operations center.
