ABB Ltd Receives USD 160 Million Order for Electrical Systems for Drill Ships in Brazil

Thursday, 7 Feb 2013 08:00am EST

ABB Ltd (ABB) announced that it has won contracts worth USD 160 million for the design, manufacture, supply, installation supervision, testing and commissioning of the central power systems to six drill ships that will operate on the deep oil and gas fields off the coast of Brazil. The client is the Jurong Shipyard Pte Ltda. The vessels will be used to drill for oil and gas from the huge pre-salt discoveries off Brazil's southeastern coast. ABB's integrated electric system will provide all operational systems and equipment on board with power generation, contributing to maximal efficiency. The seven vessels are the first in a series of drill ships for operation on ultra-deep waters, built by Estaleiro Jurong Aracruz at their shipyard in the State of Espirito Santo on Brazil's east coast. Estaleiro Jurong Aracruz is a wholly owned subsidiary of Jurong Shipyard based in Singapore. ABB's project includes the complete power systems, including generators, distribution switchgear, transformers, variable speed drives, and motors for driving the ship thrusters and drilling systems. ABB's deliveries to the shipyard are to take place in 2013 and the first ship deliveries to the owner are planned for the second quarter of the 2015.
