Dow Jones reported that Abu Dhabi's renewable energy company Masdar inaugurated on March 17, 2013 a 100 megawatt concentrated solar power plant known as Shams 1, which was developed as a joint venture between Masdar, Total SA and Abengoa SA. Shams 1 is expected to generate clean energy to power 20,000 homes in the U.A.E, according to Masdar. The USD 600 million plant, which will displace approximately 175,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year, would also qualify for carbon credits under the United Nation's Clean Development Mechanism, Masdar said in a statement.
