American Electric Power Company Inc To Shut Down West Virginia Power Plants
American Electric Power Company Inc announced that it plans to shut down three coal-fired power stations by 2016. In 2011, American Electric Power decided to shut down the Kammer, Kanawha and Philip Sporn power stations, which are all located in West Virginia. It was stated that these power plants, which were built in 1950's, did not comply with a series of environmental regulations passed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. American Electric Power did not want to spend the billions of dollars that would have been needed to upgrade or modify the plants to meet environmental regulations.
