Supervisors Begin Two-Week Strike At BHP Billiton Ltd Coal Mine-DJ

Thursday, 15 Nov 2012 10:54pm EST

Dow Jones reported that supervisors at BHP Billiton Ltd.'s (BHP) Appin metallurgical coal mine in eastern Australia walked off the job November 16, 2012 to push demands for higher pay, although the Company said it had taken steps to ensure the operation runs efficiently and safely during the two-week strike. Roughly 50 members of the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia are calling for an 18% increase in base salaries, access to arbitration and redundancy provisions as part of a new workplace agreement. The union has said supervisors at the Appin mine have had no change or review of their base salary rate for the last four years, the term of their previous workplace deal. The Company has refuted the union's claims and said it has offered a competitive agreement. The supervisors' base salaries have increased by more than 18% over the past four years, including an average 5% raise in September, the Company said.
