BHP Billiton Ltd announced that it has priced a Canadian bond under its Euro Medium Term Note Programme. The Canadian bond issue comprises CAD 750 million 3.23% bonds due 2023. The proceeds will be used for debt refinancing including the retirement of commercial paper.  Full Article

Reuters reported that BHP Billiton Ltd has agreed to sell its Pinto Valley copper mine and a railroad in Arizona to Capstone Mining Corp for $650 million. BHP and its global mining peers have put billions of dollars worth of mines, projects and aluminium operations up for sale as they look to slash costs, cut debt and focus on their highest returning assets as commodity prices slump.  Full Article

Exxon Mobil Corp, BHP Billiton Ltd Plans Floating LNG Plant Off Australia-Reuters

Reuters reported that Exxon Mobil Corp and BHP Billiton Ltd are planning to build the floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessel in offshore northwestern Australia. The vessel would produce 6 million tonnes to 7 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG from Australia's Scarborough field, about 220 kilometres (137 miles) from the Western Australian coast, beginning in 2020-2021. Exxon and BHP, which are 50-50 joint venture partners in the Scarborough development, expect to make a final investment on the plant in 2014-2015, Exxon said in the filing. It did not give any cost estimates for the plant.  Full Article

Minority Partner Backs Down In Harry Winston Diamond Corp Mine Battle To Take Over Mine From BHP Billiton Ltd-Reuters

Reuters reported that Harry Winston Diamond Corp said that a lawsuit filed by a minority partner in the Ekati diamond mine in Canada's Northwest Territories has been dropped, clearing the way for Harry Winston to take over the mine from Australia's BHP Billiton Ltd. Harry Winston's $500 million deal to take control of Ekati from partner BHP, announced in November, hit a snag last month when another partner, C. Fipke Holdings Ltd, which has a right of first refusal, filed a claim alleging that BHP had failed to comply with the joint venture agreement. Fipke has formally discontinued the action and all of the partners in Ekati have waived their rights of first refusal with respect to the agreement, Harry Winston said. The deal, which must still meet regulatory approvals, includes the current operating mine along with a buffer zone with development potential. Supervisors To Strike At BHP Billiton Ltd's Dendrobium Coal Mine In Australia-DJ

Dow Jones reported that supervisors at one of BHP Billiton Ltd.'s (BHP) coal mines in eastern Australia plan to walk off the job January 11, 2013 , in an escalation of a dispute over pay at the mining company's Illawarra Coal division in New South Wales state. The Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia, which represents 32 supervisors at the Dendrobium metallurgical coal mine, said the workers would strike January 11, 2013 and January 14, 2013 and continue a ban on working unscheduled overtime and other action. The union said it has demanded an increase in the base rate of the supervisors' pay to bring it to a middle market level in the state's coal mining industry. It didn't disclose the increase that workers are seeking.  Full Article

BHP Billiton Ltd Considers Sale Of UK Petroleum Operations; To Sell Minority Interest In Planned Browse Gas-export Project To PetroChina Co Ltd-DJ

Dow Jones reported that BHP Billiton Ltd is considering exiting its U.K. petroleum operations, including crude oil and natural gas fields and a processing plant, as part of ongoing efforts to tighten the focus of its portfolio of mining and energy assets. The Company has launched a strategic review of the business and is exploring options, include the possible sale of the assets. BHP operates Liverpool Bay, which consists of five producing offshore gas and oil fields in the Irish Sea and the Point of Ayr onshore processing plant in north Wales, and associated infrastructure. It owns a 46.1% stake in the operation, while ENI SpA owns the rest. Earlier this month, BHP agreed to sell a minority interest in the planned Browse gas-export project off Western Australia to PetroChina Co Ltd for USD1.63 billion in cash.  Full Article
