Chrysler Group LLC Issues Four Recalls Totaling About 560,000 Vehicles-DJ

Dow Jones reported that Chrysler Group LLC said it is recalling around 490,000 cars and SUVs because of a safety concern related to an automatic head-restraint function. The recall affects 2011 to 2013 Chrysler Sebrings, 200s and Dodge Avengers; 2011 to 2013 Jeep Liberty SUVs; and 2011 to 2012 Dodge Nitro SUVs. Around 442,000 of the vehicles were sold in the U.S. The problem is tied to an automatic head-restraint function that moves forward automatically during rear-impact crashes, in a feature meant to mitigate neck injuries. The car company blamed potentially faulty microcontrollers, installed in a supplied component that entered the supply chain after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan created a global shortage in microcontrollers. Chrysler said it will replace the component or upgrade the system software at no cost to customers.
